Training

Learn microbiome science by doing it

Trainees in the lab work hands on with real microbiome studies, from samples at the bench to analysis on our servers. Many of the methods they learn are the same ones we teach at workshops across Canada and abroad.

Bioinformatics

Every trainee learns to work confidently with sequencing data. That includes the command line, running analyses on the lab's servers, and taking amplicon and metagenomic data from raw reads to taxonomic and functional profiles.

  • Command line and computing on high performance servers
  • Amplicon and shotgun metagenomic workflows
  • Statistics and visualization in R and Python
  • Reproducible analysis and version control

Wet lab

Working alongside the Integrated Microbiome Resource, trainees see how microbiome data are generated. They learn how samples are handled and prepared for sequencing, and why those steps matter.

  • Sample handling and DNA extraction
  • Library preparation for sequencing
  • Controls and good practice
  • Sequencing with the IMR team

Microbiome Helper

Microbiome Helper is our collection of standard operating procedures, tutorials and scripts for amplicon and metagenomic analysis. It grew out of our own analysis workflows and now forms the core of the material we teach at workshops. Each year's workshop tutorials are kept on the wiki, so anyone can work through them at their own pace.
